AUDIOVISUAL ARCHIVIST

ABOUT ME

I am the audiovisual archivist at the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) State Archives, where I oversee the accessioning, processing, cataloging, digitization, conservation, digital preservation, reference requests, and development of policies and procedures for film, video, and audio materials. The SHSND audiovisual holdings I manage consist of local television, state agency, home movie, and amateur and professional film collections, as well as oral histories. Thus I work with a range of formats, including motion picture film, open reel audio, and broadcast video formats like U-matic, Betacam, MII and DVCPRO.

I hold my Masters of Science in Information Studies from University of Texas at Austin School of Information (iSchool). While completing my MSIS degree, I volunteered at Texas State Library & Archives Commission (TSLAC) digitizing 16mm film, interned at the Disney Lucasfilm film archive for a summer, and worked as the audiovisual archives intern at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at UT. The Briscoe Center is also where I conducted my Capstone project, for which I developed a digitization selection plan for over 600 audiovisual materials in the Abbie Hoffman collection.

EXPERIENCE

Audiovisual Archives Intern
@ Dolph Briscoe Center for American History
Fall 2019 - Spring 2020

At the Briscoe Center's audiovisual archives, I conducted digitization, timed text, and metadata entry for 1/4-inch open reel, video tapes, and audio cassettes from collections such as Abbie Hoffman PapersMolly Ivins Papers, and White South Project Archive. Additionally, I inspected video and audio tapes for signs of deterioration and damage to confirm viability for digitization. I often added leader, spliced broken tape, and re-housed tape if its reel or shell was damaged in order to ensure long term preservation.

  • Magnetic media digitization

  • Magnetic media preservation

  • Metadata for magnetic & digital media
